Kids STEP UP

Kids Serve To Educate and Promote Health Utilizing Peers

We founded Kids STEP UP in 2020 by forging a partnership with the United Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara and Dr. Cynthia Kim (pediatric MD, PhD) to create an innovative, project-based educational program that uses the Whole Child approach to address under-served LatinX children in Santa Barbara and provide academic enrichment while promoting physical & mental health.

CO-DIRECTOR and CO-FOUNDER

The KSU program consists of summer programming sustained learning through the year. Each student is assessed for math and reading levels, based on California standards, with a goal to improve by at least 50% in each subject area per year. An academic plan  is  personalized for each student, with goals in math, reading and writing, and a peer tutor is carefully matched with each student. In the past four years, I have:

  • Directed and supervised the pilot phase of KSU program in Summer 2020, utilizing 1:1 specialized instruction through peer tutors, addressing the importance of in-person teaching and specialized instruction in a quality summer and school year program

  • Assisted in creation of project-based 100-hour curriculum (weekly themes ranging from heart, brain, digestive and musculoskeletal system) as a foundation for grades 2-5 in math, reading, writing, and science

  • Founded broader “Math Skills” program, working with a math consultant to create and implement programming to build math aptitude and academic confidence through interactive tools and games

  • Created scalable and sustainable platform through collaboration with neighboring high schools, to integrate the program and build KSU website providing program information and building awareness and outreach

  • Directed full school 2022/23-year program at Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara; organized and created supporting materials for high school peer tutors from Cate School to provide “Math Skills” programming during the school year

  • Collaborated with Dr. Kim to create proprietary “Heart Module” and “Nutrition” project-based summer programming, including supporting educational materials to promote academic enrichment through focus on physical and mental health
